Many people wake up one day and decide they want to meditate or explore spirituality. While this is a great intention, true spiritual growth doesn’t happen overnight. Just like learning any new skill, the mind also needs time, practice, and patience to understand meditation deeply.
Think of it like teaching a young child to read. A child doesn't start by reading full essays. First, they learn the alphabet, then how to join two letters, followed by small three-letter words. With time and effort, they learn how to form sentences, and eventually, they are able to write and read full essays.
In the same way, we cannot expect to master spirituality in a short amount of time. It's a gradual process. One or two days of chanting or meditation might bring peace for a moment, but that’s not enough to truly transform the mind or connect deeply with the inner self.
What Happens When We Start Meditating?
In the beginning, when we sit to meditate or chant the divine name, the mind might feel restless. Thoughts may come and go like scenes from a movie; memories, worries, emotions, and even physical discomfort can interrupt the focus.
This is completely natural. Our mind is like a ball that has been bouncing with energy for years. When we first try to still it, it doesn’t stop immediately. It jumps from thought to thought, but slowly, with consistent practice, it begins to settle down.
Also, just as every day is different, each day of chanting or meditation can bring a different experience. Some days you may feel deeply peaceful, while on other days, you might feel distracted. This is part of the journey.

How Much Chanting is Enough?
According to Sant Gobind Ram Ji (Sant Ji), it’s good to begin with 15 minutes of chanting every day. This allows your mind to start adjusting to the new habit.
With time, try to slowly increase this duration to at least 1 hour and 15 minutes daily. Why this specific time? Because it usually takes the first 15 minutes just to calm the mind and settle into a meditative state. The remaining one hour allows for a deeper spiritual experience and connection.
Focus Point
Meditation and chanting are like learning to read the language of the soul. It takes time, regular practice, and patience. Don’t rush the process or expect immediate results. Every effort counts. Keep going gently and consistently. Over time, your mind will learn to listen, to settle, and to experience the peace and depth that spirituality brings.
